What is Strategy in DECIDE?

The DECIDE Strategies

Watch the following video to learn about the different strategies you can use in DECIDE.

Here is a very, very short video with a high-level critique of Porter's Competitive Strategies. We felt it was important to share a different perspective.

The Emergent Strategy

The Opportunist

The EMERGENT STRATEGY is a strategy that evolves overtime and is not as detailed and thought out like most deliberate strategies. Often it occurs not because of the plan, but rather because of unanticipated opportunities.  For example: Walmart found that locating itself in rural areas near large cities was both cost and demand effective. Alternatively, an emergent strategy may arise due to errors or mistakes made. Back in the sixties Honda Motorcycle introduced a smaller bike after failing to effectively compete with the larger Harley's.

The emergent approach is probably most apt when it is difficult to predict the market place. In the simulation:

  • Look for unanticipated opportunities such as a void in the market – no one is directing their effort toward a specific market segment
  • The market looks very uncertain  - so let our strategy evolve
  • Watch the competition closely – you need to know your competitions' pricing, sales volume, marketing mix
  • Look for mistakes-  go for a competing team's market when you see they are having serious problems
  • Avoid tough competition – avoid potential price wars and/or too many firms in the same market segment
