Task One
Consider the following conflict analysis exercise – think of an ongoing conflict you’ve had with someone. Send Kat an email briefly describing your conflict and answer the following questions.
- What do you think they care about (what are the core values/interests they are saying “yes” to – as opposed to their “position”)?
- What “offers” could you “yes, and” (without agreeing with their position)?
- What mutually agreeable solutions might be created?
Task Two
WATCH BILL MURRAY AS POLONIUS!
Now, having watched the video, answer the following questions and them your responses to Kat via email.
- Consider Polonius in terms of “the censor.” Do you have a similar voice giving you contradictory advice?
- Consider Polonius in terms “yes, and:” What is his big “yes, and” in making this speech? What are some of the “yes, ands” contained in his speech?
- There are a lot of “buts!” in the speech. Can you see them as yes, ands? How? Why?
- Imagine you are Laertes. How much do you really hear? How many contradictions? Why don’t you answer?
- Can you come up with a one-sentence speech that Polonius might have said to his son before he leaves, that would encompass the whole speech?
