Transition Statements

There are many transitions that occur. In general transitions occur:

  • Within a CONDUCT phase
  • Between CONDUCT phases

Within A CONDUCT Phase

It is always important to the rapport developed during the interview to ask for permission before doing something big. For instance, when confirming the time commitment of the interview, ask if that is okay. Or, when confirming the agenda, ask if he has anything to add. Essentially, even though we know the candidate will always agree with us, it is vital to the establishment of a comfortable relationship and interaction. In other words, ask or tell before doing something. It may feel weird in a normal, everyday conversation, but within the context of an interview it helps make the candidate feel more comfortable.

Between CONDUCT Phases

Same deal. Tell and ask! That is all we’re saying. Inform the candidate what you are doing before you do it and ask if that is all right.

Examples

  • After your initial framing ask, “I’m going to ask you some questions now. Is that all right with you?”
  • After the Assessment, say, “Well, I’ve asked quite a few questions, let me take a few minutes and explain the job to you and what Imerys is like. Okay?”
  • After the candidate asks her questions, say, “Great, do you have any more questions? … Okay, then, let’s talk for a minute about our next steps, ok?”
